CLEVELAND, Ohio – On Wednesday, Patriots coach Bill Belichick told the New England media he could not talk about Josh Gordon because the trade had not been finalized yet.
Shortly after, Gordon went to the Patriots' training ground with his new number 10 and the trade was over.
Now, it appeared that the holdup in the deal was apparently the Patriots insisting that the seventh round pick that they recover in the deal is no longer conditional, by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Previously, the Browns would have had to return only the seventh round of 2019 if Gordon was not active during 10 games. Now they have to give it up anyway. So it's Gordon and 2019 seventh for a 2019 fifth: The Patriots have pulled back two laps for an opportunity to rejuvenate the career of one of the NFL's most talented receivers.
To get a fifth and give a seventh return to the Browns to receive a sixth round for Gordon from the point of view of the trading table. A sixth usually does not give you much – unless you reach Tom Brady, the best quarter of all time.
