In photos: Harvest Moon rises above Singapore

SINGAPORE: If you looked up from your phone this week, you would have had a magnificent show: the Harvest Moon overlooking the Singapore skies.

The Harvest Moon is the first full moon after the autumnal equinox, which took place on September 22 this year and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) predicted on Tuesday, September 25th.

The moon also marks the beginning of the Mid-Autumn Festival, which is celebrated in parts of East Asia, including Singapore.

Channel NewsAsia's A Kannan player took these photographs of the ethereal phenomenon around 8 pm in the woods.

"The moon is beautiful, this September moon is special because it marks the beginning of autumn," he said.

Kannan, a 53-year-old official, said Harvest Moon was his favorite and had managed to capture him several times, each time trying different perspectives.

He also shared pictures that he took from the moon early Tuesday morning.

"The moon was … red (my photos are) unedited and extracted from my block at 6:30 am," he added.

During this period after the autumnal equinox, the moon is approaching the sunset, leaving a shorter period of darkness between sunset and the moon. Farmers can work late into the night in the light of this moon, according to NASA's blog on the moon.

Many others around the world have taken on social media to share their photographs of the moon with its distinct orange glow. In the UK, social media users have described the moon as "incredible" and "breathtaking".
