Three children, including a three-day-old child, and two adults were in critical but stable condition after being stabbed at a day care center in Queens Friday by an employee who then cut her wrist, police said.
The assault took place around 3:40 am at the facility, a residential daycare in the Flushing district of Queens, police said. Infants, all less than one month old, were taken to the New York-Presbyterian Hospital after being stabbed. One of the adults who was stabbed was the father of one of the infants, police said; he was stabbed in the leg. The other adult was a co-worker of the employee and was stabbed to the torso, police said.
While the three infants, two girls and a boy, were in critical condition, one of the girls sustained more serious injuries than the others, said Juanita Holmes, deputy chief of the Queens North Police District Patrol. . The girl was not originally supposed to survive, Deputy Chief Holmes said, but her health has improved since then.
When the officers arrived at the scene, the employee who had cut her wrist was unconscious, according to the police. But she regained consciousness after the officers had applied a tourniquet to stop the bleeding, and the 52-year-old employee was taken into custody.
Two knives were found on the scene, the police said.
The daycare is in a Flushing home that is home to several families and a total of nine children, the police said. It was not immediately clear whether the establishment was registered with the state as a licensed day care center.
The names and ages of the five victims and the employee were not released. No information was immediately available on the grounds.
Chief Holmes said the police had never called for Flushing's home, but the New York City 311 hotline had received a complaint in 2011 for crying children.
