Amritsar:

The main preacher Sukhdev Kumar was among the three killed on Sunday in a grenade attack on a religious congregation, an incident that the police consider a "terrorist act".

According to the police, the grenade was launched on the scene where Mr. Kumar was holding the congregation.

Although those present stated that the preacher may have been targeted by the attackers, with the grenade being thrown close to the platform where he was addressing the rally, the police rejected this suggestion.

S Parmar, Inspector General of Police, said that it seemed unlikely that the particular preacher was the target.

He added that police would present more facts soon as various teams of investigators were working on the case.

However, it was learned that the police had deployed strict security measures around the house of Mr. Kumar, a resident of the village of Meerakot, located just two kilometers from the incident site.

Three people were killed and 20 wounded in the attack that took place inside Nirankari Bhavan in the village of Adliwal near Rajasansi in Amritsar, police said.

A religious congregation of the Nirankaris was being conducted inside Nirankari Bhavan at the time of the events. The mission of Sant Nirankari is a spiritual organization and the Bhavan is close to the international airport.

The grenade was launched by two people carrying a turban motorcycle. They also had their faces covered. Police chief executive Suresh Arora, who rushed to the scene with high-ranking police officers, told reporters that the police were treating him as a terrorist act.
