Muqadessa Ahmadzai, 25, runs in Nangarhar province, where many districts are threatened by the Taliban or Islamic State and where the provincial capital, Jalalabad, has been destroyed by multiple suicide bombings.
She says that she is running to Parliament to try to correct some of the wrongs of the elites, in every way possible.
"We have not received the kind of representation we were hoping for," said Ms Ahmadzai, who led a nonprofit group that created literary centers in schools for women writers. "Not only did they not fight for our rights, but they also violated our rights," she added. "They are at the origin of the crisis in Afghanistan".
The coming months will probably be even harder for the patience of ordinary Afghans and for the consistency of government.
Saturday's vote is expected to produce the kind of localized disputes that will once again place the coalition government and its international partners in a fire-fighting mode.
Mr. Bahar, the poet, said that he was trying various things to relax, like talking about long walks.
