An unknown reptile lived on Earth 310 million years ago.

The researchers note that footprints extend to the meter and in an unusual way – diagonally. The traces belong to the Carboniferous period when the Earth was inhabited by gymnosperm plants and the first reptiles. "The tracks give the impression that two lizards have walked side by side. But lizards do not walk side by side, that does not happen, "said University of Nevada professor Stephen Rowland.

Scientists have put forward some movement options that would leave such strange footprints if an unknown reptile hit with a goal. It can act, for example, side wind: if it was strong enough, the animal could move diagonally. Another option – a steep incline, which was then also erasable animal surface when walking. It is still possible that traces remain in the competition with the enemy or that some sort of ritual attracts a partner.
