Dozens of people were killed after a collision between two buses in Zimbabwe.

Two intercity buses taking opposite directions collided Wednesday night near Rusape, about 170 km east of the capital Harare.

Ellen Gwaradzimba, provincial minister for the province of Manicaland, said one of the buses had attempted to double two transport trucks on a stretch of road where overtaking was forbidden.

The buses made a gap to avoid a frontal collision but their sides collided. Both buses were traveling at high speed, the police said.

The number of corpses has exceeded the morgue of the small town, which can accommodate only 16 corpses, reported the newspaper Herald.

Bus accidents are common in the country, where speeding often means more money for crews fighting over customers and trying to make as many trips as possible per day.

The road on which the accident occurred has recently been redone as part of the government's attempts to improve the collapse of road infrastructure.– Press Association
