AMRITSAR, India (Reuters) – The head of the state government of Punjab, in northern India, said 59 people had been killed and 57 wounded in a railway accident on Friday. which a train crashed many people gathered on the rails for a festival in Amritsar.
Refusing to comment on the probable reasons for the accident, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh told reporters Saturday that an official investigation into the accident was underway and that she should be completed within four weeks.
A large crowd had formed near the tracks on the outskirts of the city to torch effigies as part of a large Hindu festival on Friday, when the train went through the meeting in the dark, said officials and witnesses.
