A 14-year-old boy died Friday in Indiana when a basketball board fell on him while he was playing with his little sister, according to reports.
Nolan Gerwels was playing Friday night on an indoor course in the southern suburbs of Granger when the rim, the panel and the support bracket came out of the wall and fell on him, said St. Joseph County police.
Police said Nolan was injured in the head and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
"Obviously, this is an extremely unusual event, so we do a little investigation on exactly how the purpose and support are set on the wall," said the deputy chief of St. Joseph County Police, Bill Thompson. IndyStar.
Margaret Gerwels said her son was a distinguished college student who loved the sport and hoped to make the first year basketball team this year at Marian High School in Mishawaka.
"It's horrible and overwhelming," Gerwels said in a statement. "We are a close family, so everyone bears the heavy weight of his absence, he was so loved by everyone."
