In a statement Friday, staff at the Indianapolis Zoo said they heard "an unusual amount of roars" in the lions' outdoor courtyard early Monday morning.
Upon arrival, they saw a lioness, Zuri, in physical conflict with their adult lion, Nyack.
"The zoo staff did everything possible to separate the lions, but Zuri held Nyack by the neck until he stopped moving," the zoo said in a statement.
The zoo's veterinary staff conducted a necropsy on Nyack and found that the 10-year-old man had died of suffocation as a result of a neck injury.
The two lions were lodged together at the Indianapolis Zoo for eight years and produced three cubs, zoo officials said. According to staff records, there was no previous instance of aggression between Zuri and Nyack.
"We know that many people loved visiting Nyack, he was a magnificent lion and he left his legacy to his three cubs," the zoo said in a statement.
The Indianapolis Zoo announced that it would investigate this incident and that there were no plans underway to change the way it manages lions. The attack took place before the zoo opened to the public Monday morning.
