A woman was attacked and taken away by a sea-water crocodile to the far-off land of Arnhem in the Northern Territory.

The crocodile took the native ranger about 206 km southwest of Yirrkala around 10 am Friday.

The police were on the scene by boat and road from the Nhulunbuy and Evella Lake stations, said a spokesman for NT WorkSafe.

The attack took place at Gan Gan Station, where the Yirralka Rangers work in the Laynhapuy Indigenous Protected Area.

Police said they did not know the identity of the victim.
