Indonesian Air Lion announced Monday that it has lost contact with an airliner connecting Jakarta to an island off Sumatra.

A search and rescue operation was launched for the Boeing 737-800 aircraft which departed Jakarta around 6:20 am for Pangkal Pinang.

"We can confirm that one of our flights has lost touch," said Lion Air spokesman Danang Mandala Prihantoro. "His position can not yet be determined."

A telegram from the National Air Force Search and Rescue Agency asked for help in finding a place at sea off Java.

Data from Lion Air Flight 610 on the Aircraft Tracking Website, FlightAware, ends just minutes after take-off.

Lion Air is one of the youngest and largest airlines in Indonesia serving dozens of domestic and international destinations.

In 2013, one of his Boeing 737-800 missed the runway by landing on the island of Bali, where he crashed into the sea without killing any of the 108 people on board .
