DAVIE –
Everything is in the air for the Dolphins when it comes to starting the injured shoulder of quarterback Ryan Tannehill.
As the team prepares for this week's home game against the Lions, the only certainty offered by head coach Adam Gase was that Tannehill would be the starter on his return and that it was not about 'an end of season injury. The organization also seems unclear about its status for this week and will have to proceed with Brock Osweiler unless something changes.
"Nothing has changed," said Gase. "We will have to wait a few days and see if he feels better before Wednesday and Thursday. It's such an unusual situation, because last week, when we started the week, it was bad, but the situation worsened over the weeks. That's why we ended up in a position where we did not really think we were going to be.
"Normally, every time he is injured or injured, he always progresses positively. That's why we thought we would probably have the same thing. This did not happen. That's why we waited until the last minute and that's where we are right now. We'll see what happens this week. I will know more when I can see him throw again.

The dolphins gave no details on Tannehill's question, except that it is the painful right shoulder. It is not thought that it is an acromioclavicular joint stride, which is a more serious injury extending over several weeks.
While Tannehill was sometimes suffering from shoulder pains early in the season, the team thinks this injury occurred in the Cincinnati defeat on Oct. 7. In the fourth quarter, Tannehill was rushed and attempted to throw, but was hit on the arm by Bengals. The defensive wing Carlos Dunlap for a strip-tack.
He fully practiced last Wednesday and Thursday, but struggled to get to the field on Friday.
Gase's fear is that Tannehill does not have enough strength in his arms until he heals. The plan is to rest him until he feels 100%, no matter how Osweiler plays in his absence.
"I just want him to be in good health," said Gase. "I want him to be right. I do not want him to get into a situation where he is going to do something and it's not there – like he needs to throw a ball in some way and that he can not formulate it as he thinks that he can do it and then you throw a ball that does not come out well.
"That's what I liked most about this game: can you make the shots as you wish? That's where we talked a lot. It was his same concern. "
The Dolphins pitched Tannehill ahead of Sunday's game against the Bears, and both sides agreed he was out of play. Miami turned to Osweiler and he completed 28 of his 44 passes for 380 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions for a score of 94.9 for smugglers in a 31-28 overtime win.
Because Detroit runs a defense similar to that of New England – Matt Patricia, Lions New Year coach – was the Patriots Defender Coordinator from 2012 to 17 – Gase is comfortable waiting again until 'to Sunday for a decision on Tannehill.
"It's literally day-to-day," said Gase. "He could wake up on Wednesday and feel good, go out and throw."
Tannehill opened the scoring with three wins in a row and a score of 121.8, then played two of the worst games of his career against Patriots and Bengals.
Before the Chicago game, Tannehill had not missed a start of the game if it was not for serious knee injuries that prevented him from playing. He played 77 consecutive games until December 2016 and did not miss the game in the first five games of the season.
