Diane Bryant, the longtime director of Intel hired by Google Cloud as COO, left after less than a year, as Business Insider had announced on Tuesday. None of the major players – Google, Intel or Bryant herself – have so far said why.
But we have an idea of Google Cloud's climate before he leaves. A source close to the situation told Business Insider that his hiring last December mystified some to Google from the start.
Of course, Bryant seemed to be a star. She had the right track record and the right references. Nevertheless, two things stand out from the announcement on the Google blog that she was hired to attract people's attention, the source said.
At Intel, she oversaw the company's Data Center Group from 2012 to 2017. She was known as a technical infrastructure management genius.

The problem was that Google Cloud already had a genius, and someone with a very similar skill, in Urs Hölzle, senior vice president of Google's technical infrastructure. At Google, Hölzle is a legend. He was employed by Google # 8. He was one of the designers of the company's revolutionary data centers.
What role would Hölzle fulfill if Bryant arrived, and why Google Cloud needed a COO while he already had Hölzle, were only some of the questions asked, according to the source. The other curious aspect of the announcement was the lack of details about what his tasks would be, and who would pay him, the source said.
The source said that when Bryant arrived, people were very excited, but it was obvious that she had not thought about what she would actually do. "At least in the beginning, she never got involved," the source said. "She never went there."
Now, many in the tech industry are speculating that Bryant will be running for Brian Krzanich as CEO of Intel. Krzanich resigned in June after it was revealed that he had had a past consensual relationship with an Intel employee. Before leaving Intel, Bryant was considered one of Krzanich's heirs – and now the CEO position is available.
The lack of a defined role at Google Cloud was not the only particularity of Bryant's hiring we hear. Six months before leaving Intel, Bryant had taken time off to attend a "personal family affair".

"We can confirm that Diane Bryant is no longer with Google," said a spokesman on Tuesday. "We are grateful for the contributions she has made to Google and we wish her the best in her next pursuit."
Google declined to comment further. Hölzle and Bryant could not be immediately contacted for a comment.
