David Beckham's Mosaic Trek, which is trying to fulfill its dream of becoming an owner of an MLS team, has taken a new step towards reality. We now know how to call this presumed imminent franchise, and it's a name as disgusting as we imagined it:
Inter Miami joins Sporting Kansas City, D.C. United and nadir Real Salt Lake as MLS franchises that appear to have been appointed after consultation with true fútbol version of the Wu-Tang name generator. "Inter Miami" of course evokes images of "Inter Milan", which we bet is not a coincidence. And like hearing people talking about Inter and referring to that unholy bastard league, the name of the Miami team does not even have its cosplay.
First, the word order does not align. The team calls Inter Miami CF, but its full name is the Club Internacional de Fútbol Miami. The team adopts Spanish language conventions when they wish, but not when it prevents them from joining their more famous namesake. Second, fans of the Italian team do not even like the nickname "Inter Milan". This means that the name of Inter Miami is based on an anglicization of the name of true fútbol fans will never even say.
The Miami franchise apparently tries to pretend that the name is a nod to the largely Hispanic population of Miami, but this brings us to the third flaw of the name: the "Inter" construction is not even Hispanic. When referring to "Inter", we usually refer to the Italian Internazionale Milano or the Brazilian club Sporting Club Internacional. As far as I know, there are no prominent "Internacionales" in the Spanish-speaking world, which further undermines Inter Miami's alleged claim to authenticity.

Due to Beckham's presence as the face of the Miami Owners Group, the team would have been perfectly entitled to call itself Miami United or something similar, which would reflect the history and heritage of team. Instead, when the opportunity to give oneself a name reflecting the true tradition, Inter Miami resorted to a sham of "tradition" because, who knows, maybe that was better tested in a newsgroup or something. To be fair, it's not like Inter Miami was the worst result imaginable. But it is better to complain now that when AC Deportivo Austin FC take the lead early next season, we can at least say, "We told you so."
