International Psychiatric Conference Concludes in Lahore
LAHORE: The International Psychiatric Conference was completed Sunday in a city hotel and recommended the government to take steps to provide treatment services for more and more serious mental health problems in the country.
The three-day meeting organized by the Pakistan Psychiatric Society (PPS) made a number of recommendations in the light of information provided by Pakistani and foreign experts: The creation of psychiatric posts at the district level was recommended, because the existing posts were not enough. to meet the demands of such a large population of Pakistan. Pakistan has one of the lowest rates of mental illness in the world, a psychiatrist for more than half a million people. It recommended integrating child, genetic and forensic psychiatry services into the existing mental health system by introducing their scholarship and diploma programs. He also recommended the introduction of psychiatry as the main subject in the first cycle. The manager recommended to make changes to the law on mental health after consulting the experts. It also required the enactment of the law in provinces where such a law did not exist.
In the plenary session on Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Dr. Zoobia Ramazan spoke about psychiatric morbidity among child victims of sexual abuse in intact families versus broken families. Professor Saleem Jehangir chaired a session entitled "Psychiatry: Neuroscience and Spirituality". Dr. Naeem Siddiqui addressed the topic of neuroscience or spirituality: confusion or reality, Professor Shahid Rashid on psychological and spiritual growth, Dr. Rida Hanif on trends in psychiatric diseases in Pakistan, Dr. Ayesha Silwat on impact of spiritual practices on mental health.
Professor Ghulam Rasool chaired a session on mood disorders. Dr. Amer Abbas Qureshi presented on major depressive disorders in epileptic patients, Dr. Imtiaz Ahmed Dogar on psychiatric comorbidity associated with mental disorders, Professor Asif Bashir on deep brain stimulation and psychosurgery, current and future applications , Dr. Rana Muzammil Shamsher Khan on the frequency of obsessive-compulsive symptoms in depression.
