Iran’s Rouhani: US chose wrong path with sanctions, ‘will definitely be defeated’

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Wednesday that the United States made a mistake in reimposing sanctions on his country and will “definitely be defeated,” according to Reuters.

Rouhani’s comments come after the Trump administration reimposed sanctions on the country earlier this month after exiting the 2015 Iran nuclear deal in May.

“The Americans will definitely be defeated in this path. The path they have chosen is wrong and incorrect,” Rouhani said to the Tasnim news agency according to Reuters.

“If they are being honest and they are looking for regional security, this is not the path. If they are being honest and respect the Iranian people, this is not the path.”

“They have made themselves more infamous in the world and in front of our people,” he added.

“It’s clear for everyone that the incorrect and cruel sanctions of America will harm the dear and honorable people of our country.”

In addition to hitting Iran’s energy sector, the sanctions will also target Iran’s shipping, shipbuilding and financial sectors.

White House national security adviser John Bolton said earlier this month that more sanctions are likely to be levied against Iran.

The Trump administration has said its goal is to force Iran to end its “malign activity” in the Middle East as well as curtail its nuclear arsenal.
