Iraq orders that hundreds of convicted terrorists executed after the death of hostages found

The Iraqi prime minister ordered the immediate execution of all those on death row after EI killed eight hostages.

Haider al-Abadi said the executions would avenge the prisoners. Mr. Abadi ordered "the immediate punishment of death row terrorists whose convictions have passed the decisive stage," said the prime minister's office. The order concerns all those whose appeal process has been exhausted. AFP quoted an Iraqi judicial source as saying that more than 300 people had been sentenced to death for being members of the Islamic State.

The EI publishes a video my six captured policemen and members of the Hashed al-Shaabi paramilitary Activists said they would kill hostages unless the Iraqi authorities release Sunni Muslim women detained in its prisons within three days.

Abadi suggested that the hostages were probably already dead when the video was broadcast. Their bodies were among the eight found decomposed and tied with explosive vests at Tel Sharaf in Salaheddine province on Wednesday.

"Our military and security forces will vigorously retaliate against these terrorist cells," said Abadi. "We promise that we will kill or arrest those who committed this crime.
