LONDON – Brexit undermines hard-won peace in Northern Ireland by creating tension between Catholic and Protestant communities, Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said Saturday, as hope for a solution to the problem of the Irish border blocked the negotiations.
"The Brexit undermined the Good Friday agreement" – the 1998 peace agreement that ended three decades of violence in Northern Ireland – "and it weakens relations between Britain and Ireland, "said Varadkar.
"All that separates the two communities in Northern Ireland is undermining the agreement on Good Friday and anything that distinguishes Great Britain and Ireland is damaging to this relationship," he said. on Irish radio RTE.
Negotiations between Britain and the European Union on the departure of Great Britain from Britain have bogged down on the issue of the border between Ireland, a member of the EU , and British Northern Ireland.
Both parties agree that there should be no customs posts or other barriers that could disrupt businesses and residents or harm the peace in Northern Ireland. But they did not agree on how to guarantee that – and Britain must leave the bloc on March 29.

The EU has proposed to keep Northern Ireland in a customs union with the bloc in order to remove the need for border controls on the island.
But the British Conservative government and its Northern Irish ally, the Democratic Unionist Party, will not accept that, as it would involve customs and regulatory controls between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK.
Britain, on the contrary, wants to keep the whole of the United Kingdom in an EU customs union, but only temporarily.
Although there has been no outward sign of a Brexit advance, Irish and British officials are increasingly optimistic about the possibility of finding a solution.
After meeting in Dublin on Friday with Irish Deputy Prime Minister Simon Coveney, British Deputy Prime Minister Theresa May, David Lidington, said the negotiators were "very close" to an agreement.
Coveney agreed that there had been "a lot of progress".
"I think it's possible to get an agreement in November," he said.
