SAINT JOHN, NB – Witnesses said there was an explosion at an oil refinery in Saint John, NB this morning.
Irving Oil said it was investigating a "major incident" at the refinery, but did not provide details.
Litsa Daeres, who lives nearby, said he heard a "loud bang" and felt his whole house shaking shortly after 10am.
Michael Steeves, a resident of Saint John, claims that he was driving about a kilometer when he noticed the fire and the thick black smoke.
He says he has seen hundreds of locals watching the situation unfold from a distance.
Police in Saint John tweeted that she was responding to the incident and asked people to stay away from the area. Several streets have been closed.
"From where I was, you could see flames – I guess they were a hundred feet in the air – and you have a huge plume of black smoke," Steeves said. about an hour and a half later.
Steeves said the incident reminded him of a similar event in the late '90s, when the same refinery suffered a similar blast that killed a person.
"Just to see the clouds and what they shut down, it seems like a fairly similar level of events," he said.
Irving said on Twitter that the company "actively evaluated the situation" and would share more information as soon as it was available.
