The Giants were embarrassed by the Eagles on Thursday 34-13 in a nasty rout, and the tensions in New York are rising. Saquon Barkley was the only positive point for the Giants on Thursday, carrying the ball 13 times for 130 yards and catching nine more passes for 99 yards. Eli Manning continued his fights by completing 24 of 43 passes for a total of 281 yards, no touchdowns and no choice.
It was a hellish season for Manning, and Thursday was perhaps his worst performance yet. When entering this game, a completion percentage of 71.66 was pretty much all he had to hang up – and even this was mainly due to Pat Shurmur's conservative offensive play this year. A good game against the Panthers in the fifth week ended in a defeat. Even though it is arguably Manning's best game of the season, he still made two choices. Manning's struggles are a microcosm of an Giants' offense that desperately needs a spark. He totals 1,162 yards and is fourth among the NFL starting QB, but his six touchdowns are the 24th.
In Friday's "Off the Bench" podcast, Danny Kanell and Raja Bell are joined by David Samson to talk about Manning's future with the Giants. After the debacle of last year when Ben McAdoo put him on the bench, it seems that Shurmur might be forced to make a similar call. Manning is a free player in 2020, but the alarming decline of 37 years and the Giants' lack of options at the quarterback position heralds a long season for the Giants.
