Is there still a red tide off Anna Maria Island, Florida?

After the local waters have seen a slight respite from the red tide, a new report from the Wildlife Conservation Commission and Florida Fish suggests that toxic algal concentrations are increasing again.

In Manatee County, Karenia Brevis levels are between 5 and 25 percent higher than last week, experts said. The reported increase comes after a mid-week report stated "high" concentrations in the region.

The latest weekly update from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission indicates that the red tide is on the rise again in Manatee County.

According to the FWC report, "high background concentrations" were found at or off Manatee, but Cortez Beach was the only area with "high" levels.

However, each of the five counties tested along the Gulf Coast of Florida experienced higher levels from Pinellas to Lee.

In Sarasota and Indian River counties in St. Lucia and Martin Counties on the Atlantic coast of Florida, authorities said the red tide was 25 per cent higher than last week. Killed fish and respiratory problems have also been reported in Manatee and Sarasota.

The current algal bloom has plagued Florida waters since the end of last year. Scientists say it's hard to tell when flowering will dissipate.
