JERUSALEM – Israel has been battling one of the worst measles outbreaks in decades, with more than 1,200 cases reported since the beginning of 2018.

Israeli media reported Thursday that an 18-month-old baby had died of the disease in a hospital in Jerusalem, the country's first death from measles since 2003. The child did not not been vaccinated.

The epidemic comes as the World Health Organization has reported tens of thousands of cases of measles in Europe.

According to the World Health Organization, measles is a highly contagious disease and one of the leading causes of death in the world in young children. He is easily prevented with a vaccine.

In Israel, several ultra-Orthodox Jewish sects oppose vaccination and the Ministry of Health has stepped up a campaign to increase immunization rates in unprotected communities in recent months.
