Israel re-arrest Palestinian governor of Jerusalem

Israeli police have arrested the Palestinian governor of Jerusalem for the second time in as many months, a spokesman said Sunday, following an investigation into a land sale.

Adnan Gheith was arrested in East Jerusalem overnight, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said in a statement without providing further details.

Israeli security forces did not content themselves with saying that the arrest concerned money-related problems.

Gheith will be summoned later in the day for a hearing before the Jerusalem District Court. The details of the charges against him could then be published.

On October 20, Gheith was arrested for two days before being released. The Israeli internal security agency Shin Bet said that it was "an illegal activity of the Palestinian Authority in Jerusalem".

He has also been taken for questioning several times in recent weeks and his office was raided on 4 November.

Israeli media reported that the authorities were investigating the governor following the arrest last October of a man accused of selling property in East Jerusalem to a Jewish buyer .

These sales are considered a betrayal by Palestinians concerned that Israeli settlers are buying property in East Jerusalem.

But among the Israelis, calls have been made for the authorities to release the man arrested by the PA during the sale.
The Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported that it was a Palestinian of American nationality.

Fuad Hallaq, senior adviser of the Palestine Liberation Organization in Jerusalem, told AFP that he thought the latest arrest was part of Israeli efforts to pressure Palestinian leaders to that they release the man.

Israel occupied East Jerusalem during the Six Day War of 1967, which it subsequently annexed, which has never been recognized by the international community.

It considers the entire city as its capital, while the Palestinians regard the eastern sector as the capital of their future state.

The activities of the Palestinian Authority are banned from Jerusalem by Israel.

As a result, the Palestinian Authority has a Jerusalem Minister of Affairs and a Jerusalem Governor located at Al-Ram just across the Israeli separation wall from Jerusalem in the occupied West Bank.
