Israel threatens "painful" attack on Hamas in Gaza

The Israeli prime minister is threatening "very painful blows" against Hamas leaders in Gaza City if they do not stop protests along the perimeter fence that have led to clashes with Israeli troops.

Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that Israel was about to conduct a "different activity" against Islamist militants. "If that makes sense, Hamas will stop its shooting and its violent explosions – now."

Hamas has orchestrated near-weekly demonstrations along the Israel-Gaza border since March, calling for the end of the Israeli-Egyptian blockade of the isolated territory, which has lasted for some ten years.

Friday, about twenty Palestinians crossed the border. Israeli troops shot and killed seven people there.

Israel and Hamas have waged three wars in the last decade and have recently retreated several times.
