GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip – Gaza's health ministry says 37 Palestinians were wounded by Israeli gunfire during a demonstration on the beach.

Thousands of people demonstrated Monday in front of land and sea barriers in the northwest of the Gaza Strip. Dozens of people were inhaled.

Fishing boats displaying Palestinian flags participated in the protest against the Gaza blockade, calling for an end to the fishing restrictions imposed for the last ten years or so.

The protest was sparked by Hamas, the Islamic militant group that took power in Gaza in 2007. Israel and Egypt have imposed a blockade since then, citing security concerns.

Hamas has staged regular protests against the blockade since March. Israeli gunfire killed at least 144 Palestinians at border demonstrations. In August, an elite gunman shot dead an Israeli soldier.
