The bodies of the three youths were taken to the morgue of a Gaza hospital, Palestinian officials said

Three Palestinian officials were killed during an Israeli air strike in the border region between Israel and Gaza, Palestinian officials said.

The Hamas-led ministry of health in Gaza said boys aged 12 to 14 died near the town of Khan Younis.

Israel said the Palestinians were trying to place an explosive device near the security fence in southern Gaza.

Palestinians in Gaza have been demonstrating weekly along the border with Israel since March.

The demonstrations, orchestrated by militant Hamas leaders in the territory, aim to support the declared right of Palestinian refugees to return to their ancestral homes in present-day Israel.

According to the United Nations and the Hamas-led health ministry in Gaza, more than 200 Palestinians – mostly at demonstrations – have been killed by Israeli troops since the protests began.

An Israeli soldier was shot dead by a Palestinian sniper.

Israel says its forces opened fire only in case of self-defense or against potential attackers trying to infiltrate Israel under the guise of demonstrations.
