Italy sets lower budget deficit targets

ROME – The Italian government has set its budget deficit targets for 2020 and 2021 on Wednesday at levels lower than previously envisaged, after initial government plans took the financial markets and European authorities into disarray.

The government said it was targeting a budget deficit of 2.1 percent of gross domestic product for 2020 and 1.8 percent of GDP for the next year. The government initially planned to target a deficit of 2.4% for both years.
