Wait wait. Is it a thing? According to Jaden Smith, he and Tyler, the Creator are in a romantic relationship. And have been for a while.
Okay, so is Jaden Smith. But he looked pretty sincere, and actually less enigmatic than usual, when he appeared on the scene of Tyler's Flog Gnaw Camp in Los Angeles this weekend and announced the relationship. "I want to tell you, Tyler does not want to say it, but my Tyler fucking buddy and he's been my fucking fucking friend of my life," Smith told the audience.
"If you remove something from this fucking show, that's what you need to take away," he added.
Tyler was there for all of this, gently giving Smith a finger, without denying anything. Once out of the scene, Smith used Twitter to imply once again that the two were together.
So, is that sincere? The evidence is mixed. As much as Tyler and Smith are notorious trolls.
What we do know is that they've been friends since at least 2013 (Smith once said GQ that the rapper has changed his life by presenting him to Supreme). Tyler is kind of already out of the closet, but although Smith has cultivated a queer icon image by challenging stereotypes related to fashion, he has never publicly dated women.
If the pretense of the "boyfriend" is a joke between two friends, it does not go very well, especially given the lingering stigma surrounding homosexuality in hip-hop. If that's true? 2018 blessed us with a new couple of incredible power.
