Jaden Smith, son of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith, has always been known for being off-the-wall with his art and his commentary. The 20-year-old star has made headlines for appearing on a red carpet carrying his gold-certified album or holding locks of his hair, collaborating with former vice president and environmentalist Al Gore, and other unpredictable moments.

But on Sunday night, Smith really left his fans scratching their heads. During a performance at the Camp Flog Gnaw music festival, the star began praising his friend and festival organizer Tyler, the Creator, calling him his “best friend.” In a moment captured on video by fans, Smith made a declaration about their relationship that the world wasn’t expecting. “Tyler doesn’t wanna say, but Tyler is my motherf—ing boyfriend,” he shouted. “And he’s been my motherf—ing boyfriend my whole f—ing life!”

In a video released on a fan’s Instagram account, Tyler can be seen in the audience wearing a medical face mask (due to the smoke-filled air from the raging California wildfires), waving his finger and shaking his head, as if trying to communicate that Jaden was simply making a joke.

But Smith doubled down on his statement via Twitter, writing that the news was official. “Yup @tylerthecreator,” he wrote. “I Told Everyone You Can’t Deny It Now.” Tyler responded to his tweet, not denying but simply writing, “haha you a crazy n—a man.”

It’s unclear whether Smith was being serious, and fans online are divided about his spontaneous announcement. Some feel that he was being honest about their relationship and simply coming at it in a fun way, while others believe that this is just another example of Smith doing something provocative for the sake of being provocative.
