CINCINNATI – The Cincinnati Reds claimed that pitcher Jairo Capellan was killed and two other minor league players were injured in a Saturday morning car accident in the Dominican Republic.

Dick Williams, president of the Reds, confirmed the death of Capellan and said the launcher Raul Hernandez was in critical condition and the field player Emilio Garcia was in a stable state. The club has not published any details about their injuries.

Capellan was 19, the same age as the two injured players.

"Jairo was a talented young pitcher with a bright future that was taken away from us too early," said Reds Field Coordinator in Latin America Joel Noboa at Cincinnati Enquirer. "He will be missed by everyone who has known him – his teammates, his coaches and the staff of our Dominican Academy."

The owner of the Reds, Bob Castellini, sent his condolences to the families and friends of the players, who were part of the operations of the organization in the Dominican Republic.

"Our operations in the Dominican Republic are an integral part of the organization of the Reds, and this tragedy affects us all," said Mr. Castellini. "We will remain closely involved to help everyone through this difficult time."
