Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts will not be redeemed in 2018 and will play his fifth game of the season in the first quarter against Louisiana on Saturday.
The junior started for the Crimson Tide in 2016 and 2017, but was replaced by Tua Tagovailoa in the second half of the national championship game against Georgia last season. Tagovailoa led the Crimson Tide to a return win for coach Nick Saban's fifth national title to Alabama.
With Tagovailoa leading the way, rumors began that Hurts would cut 2018, adopting a new NCAA rule that allowed players to retain a year of eligibility if they played in four games or less.
But this speculation ended on Saturday in Tuscaloosa. Hurts relieved Tagovailoa with the 28-0 Crimson Tide on the Ragin 'Cajuns, quickly sending out a 54-yard touchdown pass to Henry Ruggs III during his first afternoon training.
The SEC 2016 offensive player competed on Saturday, completing 22 of his 31 pass attempts for a total of 276 yards and four touchdowns. Hurts and Crimson Tide lead Louisiana 35-0 early in the second quarter.
