According to Aaron Suttles of Athletic (via Pat Smith of Paul Finebaum's show).

It's supposed to avoid just a redshirt if You are Tagovailoa is injured this year.

While head coach Nick Saban was unobtrusive about the quarterback battle in the summer, Tagovailoa started for Crimson Tide in the first week against Louisville and was announced as starter by ESPN's Alex Scarborough .

"Everyone knows that Tua will start and we will use Jalen's skills in the future," Saban said this week.

Hurts finished 5-for-9 on 70 yards passing and nine yards on three stakes against Louisville.

Even though it is clear that the coaching staff would like him to be active all season, buying him back could allow him to play a bigger role in the future.

Thanks to the recent rule changes by the NCAA, players are allowed to play up to four games during the regular season without burning a red jersey. This could allow the junior to play three more games while maintaining a year of eligibility.

The quarterback had been the starter of Alabama in the past two seasons before qualifying for Tagovailoa in the national championship game last season.

There was speculation before the season that Hurts would transfer if he lost the job starting, something that he vehemently denied.

Sadly, Tagovailoa is only a sophomore, so he could be around Hurts' college career even with a redshirt season.
