The fiancee of Jamal Khashoggi, a journalist and prominent Saudi critic who died inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, wrote him a moving tribute on Twitter.
"They removed your physical presence from my world, but your beautiful laugh will stay in my soul forever, my darling #jkhashoggi," Hatice Cengiz tweeted Saturday night.
Cengiz has attached a video of Khashoggi in an interview for a television documentary. During the shooting, a cat jumped on Khashoggi's lap, causing the journalist to laugh.
"You should leave that in the movie," he says to the camera.
Cengiz, a Turkish national, last saw his fiancee after he entered the consulate on 2 October to retrieve documents related to their marriage.
Cengiz says that she waited for Khashoggi in front of the consulate for about 11 hours, but he never went out. He was told to call Turan Kislakci, the head of the Turkish Arab Media Association, if he did not go out of the embassy, CNN reported.
Cengiz has been active on Twitter and has repeatedly called on world leaders to conclude their investigations and reveal information about Khashoggi's whereabouts.
Cengiz has been under police protection 24 hours a day, according to the official Turkish news agency Anadolu.
The decision was made by the Istanbul Governor 's Office, but did not specify what had motivated the decision to increase its security details.
Saudi Arabia on Saturday acknowledged that Khashoggi had died inside his consulate in Turkey, but said the 59-year-old was killed in a "hand-to-hand combat" that escalated. Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir denied Sunday that the country's powerful crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, was behind the journalist's death, and repeated that "a fraudulent operation" was responsible.
But officials are skeptical about Saudi's explanation of Khashoggi's death. Turkish officials have repeatedly extolled claims that Khashoggi was brutally tortured and dismembered by what appeared to be a 15-person killing squad from Saudi Arabia.
US President Donald Trump said Saturday that he was not satisfied with Saudi Arabia's latest response, but said that the cancellation of an agreement to $ 110 billion on weapons with Saudi Arabia would hurt the United States "far more than it would hurt them".
"Obviously, there has been deception and lies," he said in an interview with The Washington Post on Saturday. US authorities have repeatedly asked Trump to open an investigation and trigger possible Magnitsky sanctions against those involved in the disappearance of Khashoggi.
For the moment, the United States, Saudi Arabia and Turkey are continuing their investigation of the incident before Trump or the US Senate decides to take revenge.
