The replacement of Danny Boyle as director of the 25th James Bond film has been named Cary Fukunaga. In a statement released Thursday, producers confirmed the hiring of filmmaker Beasts of No Nation, stating:
"We are excited to work with Cary. His versatility and innovation make him an excellent choice for our next James Bond adventure.
Filming will begin in March 2019 for a worldwide release on February 14, 2020, three months later than planned.
Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli have reportedly met many filmmakers after Boyle was dropped in August on "creative differences", according to Boyle's script with John Hodge, author of Trainspotting.
Last week, veteran screenwriters 007, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, were confirmed for the latest installment of the franchise.
Filming was scheduled to begin in November, but after Boyle's departure, star Daniel Craig signed a filming of Knives for director Star Wars Rian Johnson this winter.
Christopher McQuarrie, whose last film Mission: Impossible won the 007 comparisons, Denis Villenueve of Arrival, Yann Demange of White Boy Rick and David Mackenzie, the Scottish director of Hell or High Water.
Fukunaga, 41, debuted with critically acclaimed Sin Nombre in 2009 before leading Michael Fassbender in a 2011 version of Jane Eyre. Beasts of No Nation followed in 2015, earning a Golden Globe nomination – and an SAG award – for star Idris Elba (who, along with Fassbender, would have run to succeed Craig).
His latest project, Maniac, is a Netflix series starring Jonah Hill and Emma Stone as participants in a mysterious pharmaceutical trial.
Fukunaga has also received a lot of praise for his work on the first season of HBO's True Detective.
