Things went awry once Glover, seemingly unaware that Foxx would claim his involvement, took the stage, performing a few lines of "This is America" ​​before admitting, "I really did not expect not to get up here. "

Foxx also had a few words about Glover's BET clothing, which he described on stage as "pajamas".

Before that, Foxx opened the show with a monologue almost entirely inspired by "Black Panther".

"We do not need a president right now, because we have our king," he said. "Ryan Coogler gave us our king."

Foxx closed his monologue by calling Michael B. Jordan into the public and bringing him on stage to read a "Black Panther" line that Foxx called "so important for today, right now".

Jordan played with his surprise stage appearance, approaching the microphone and reciting the last line of his character's film, Erik Killmonger. "Bury me in the ocean with my ancestors who jumped ships, because they knew that death was better than bondage," Jordan said.

Beyond the few other bits that have fallen flat, including an appearance in his bathrobe, Foxx won the crowd with his tribute to Anita Baker, who was honored with the show's Life Award.
