Jamie Lee Curtis spoke about an opioid addiction that she says has almost destroyed her life.
In a new cover story for People, the actress "Halloween" revealed that her addiction to painkillers began in the late 1980s and lasted 10 years.
"I was ahead of the curve of the opioid epidemic," she said. "I had a 10-year run, steal, be an accomplice." Nobody knew it.
Curtis said that she was initially prescribed opiates after minor plastic surgery "for my hereditary puffy eyes" and that she had quickly started abusing painkillers, even stealing pills from her friends and from his family.
Finally, in 1999, she asked for help and attended her first recovery meeting. She talked about her addiction to her husband for 33 years, the actor and director Christopher Guest, the same day.
Curtis' family has a long history of addiction. His father, actor Tony Curtis, fought against alcoholism, cocaine and heroin, and his half-brother, Nicholas Curtis, died of a drug overdose. heroin in 1994.
"I break the cycle that has basically destroyed the lives of generations in my family," said Curtis. "Being sober is my greatest accomplishment … bigger than my husband, bigger than my two kids and bigger than any job, success, failure, whatever."
