Once again, the Washington Redskins are severely beaten for another crucial match. Sitting at 6-3, Jay Gruden's team needs a win over the Houston Texans to stay ahead of the Dallas Cowboys (4-5). Unfortunately for Washington, Houston is currently in the midst of a run of six consecutive wins and has taken a well-deserved rest. Bill O'Brien's team is just recovering, as the crucial moment approaches, while the Redskins are waging a war of attrition. This is not the best set of circumstances.
The Redskins published the first injury report of the week following Wednesday's practice, and until now, the news is not positive. Wide receiver Jamison Crowder still lacks practices due to an ankle injury. The standout receiver has been limited with the injury since Oct. 8 and has missed five straight games. He is about to undergo an MRI and will continue to miss practices.
Similarly, running back Chris Thompson (ribs), kicker Dustin Hopkins (right groin), corner half Quinton Dunbar (tibia) and tackle Trent Williams (thumb) are all still out with wounds. Williams is still recovering from a thumb operation and will likely remain inactive for at least a week. Thompson has missed several games this season due to rib injuries sustained against New Orleans. After missing weeks six and seven, he was able to return to training during week eight but aggravated the problem. Thompson was back on the idle list in weeks 9 and 10 and seems to be heading to the same list on week 11.
Similarly, Dunbar missed two games due to a nerve injury in the shin, which made the race extremely painful for the young cornerback. Dunbar missed weeks seven and eight before returning to play in Week Nine and intercepting a pass from Matt Ryan. He looked healthy during this match, but he apparently worsened the shin injury and missed the tenth week. Washington needs Dunbar in training, knowing that it was a solid counterpart Josh Norman this season.
A new addition to Wednesday's injury report was security Montae Nicholson. The second-year Michigan State professional was out of practice due to an injury, but he should be active Sunday against the Texans. Nicholson has played every game of the season. He played seven games until the arrival of Ha Ha Clinton-Ten. He is now a substitute instead of being a starter, but we will rely on him to contribute against Houston.
On the limited side, Washington had four players who partially practiced on Wednesday. Adrian Peterson (shoulder) is slowly recovering from the myriad wounds he has suffered throughout the season and will continue to be limited or absent on Wednesday for the remainder of the season. Tackle Ty Nsekhe is struggling with an ankle injury after taking Williams' wounded place and will continue to be restricted throughout the week for his health to progress. Washington needs him completely healthy for the game considering the fact that the offensive line is completely exhausted. The other tackle, Morgan Moses, lost to the Falcons with a streaked MCL, but was able to make its way into the starting lineup. He played against Tampa Bay but was definitely in trouble. Like Nsekhe, Moses is a player that the Redskins can not afford to lose, and he will have to continue to recover from the MCL before the game.
Eventually, defensive lineman Da & Ron Payne was restricted Wednesday due to a shoulder injury. He is more recent in the injury report after starting the nine games of the season. Payne has been a solid contributor along the line with 27 combined tackles, three sacks and a forced fumble. Knowing that Houston has allowed 80 hits in the quarter this season, Washington will have to hope that this shoulder injury will be minor. We are counting on Payne to slow down this attack led by Deshaun Watson with pressure in the center.
The Redskins still have two practices before the release of the final injury report on Friday. Peterson should be fine for the future, but Dunbar, Crowder and Thompson will all be seriously doubtful unless they can participate in any capacity.
