The Rams were able to escape Sunday's game with a tight 36-3 win over the Seahawks in Los Angeles, but earlier in the week, several Rams players had to escape a far more ominous event.
After Sunday's victory, it was reported that several Rams players, coaches and leaders were forced to evacuate their homes to avoid the Californian forest fire that has already caused so much damage. According to Rich Hammond, about 100 people from the organization were forced to evacuate last week. Among them are quarterback Jared Goff, defensive lineman Aaron Donald, offensive lineman Andrew Whitworth, cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman, general manager Les Snead and defensive coordinator Wade Phillips.
Snead would have had a particularly close call, with the fire approaching his home, but no one seems to think that one of the evacuees eventually lost his home as a result of a fire.
California is currently in a state of emergency, as deadly forest fires ravage both ends of the coast and the destruction and devastation they caused on their way has been staggering. At this point, the death of more than 30 people is confirmed (most of these casualties occurring in northern California), while hundreds of others are missing. Whole houses, neighborhoods and even cities have been burned to ashes.
It's hard to imagine the helplessness that comes with the need to evacuate your home, let alone the need to go to work with a "like-minded" state of mind following. The fact that many of Rams' key players and staff have always been able to come out and help contribute to a win this weekend with everything going on is quite impressive.
On top of that, Whitworth – a 36-year-old offensive tackle – eventually gave his full match check (close to $ 540,000) to the families of the 12 victims of the Borderline Bar and Grill shooting in Thousand Oaks, CALIFORNIA.
