Jefferson Health's JeffSTAT helicopters, on Monday, November 12, became the first health system transportation service to carry life-saving blood units for emergency transfusions. Haemorrhage is the leading cause of death for trauma victims, and early transfusions of red blood cells are known to reduce the risk of death. A study from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center published in the JThe American College of Surgeons journal reviewed five years of data and determined that air-transport trauma victims receiving helicopter blood transfusions before arriving at a trauma center have a better chance of survival.
Philadelphia-based JeffSTAT helicopters began shipping blood for patient transport in April 2017.
