More than 30 Indian passengers, some with nose and ears, were treated after the pilots "forgot" to switch on a pressure switch in the cabin, officials said.
Jet Airways Flight 9W 697 from Mumbai to Jaipur turned around shortly after take-off.
Videos tweeted by passengers aboard the aircraft showed oxygen masks deployed inside the aircraft.
The Boeing 737, which was carrying 166 passengers, landed safely.
The Ministry of Aviation said the cockpit crew had been removed from duty pending an investigation.
Passenger Darshak Hathi tweeted a video from inside the cabin as air pressure dropped and oxygen masks fell.
Another passenger, Satish Nair, tweeted a photo of himself bleeding from the nose and complained that "the safety of the passengers had been completely ignored" by the airline.
Lalit Gupta, senior official of India's aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGAC), told the Hindustan Times newspaper that the crew had forgotten to select a switch to maintain the pressure in the cabin.
Jet Airways said in a statement that Thursday morning's flight had made a comeback "due to a loss of pressure in the cabin" and "regretted" the inconvenience to its passengers.
"The B737 aircraft, with 166 guests and 5 crew members, landed normally in Mumbai.All guests were safely landed and taken to the terminal.
In January, Jet Airways failed two pilots following reports of a fight inside the cockpit of a flight between London and Mumbai. The flight, which carried 324 passengers, landed safely.
