Jill Soltau has just been appointed Executive Director of J.C. Penney and a member of the Board of Directors. She will officially start on October 15, 2018. She has been a veteran of the retail business for 30 years. She was most recently President and CEO of Jo-Ann Fabric and Crafts Stores. Previously, she most recently held the position of President of Shopko Stores.

Ms. Soltau was appointed General Manager and President of Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores on March 2, 2015. Previously, she worked for eight years in Shopko stores, where she became CMO Chairperson). Earlier in her career at Shopko, she held the position of General Merchandising Agent (GMM) for apparel and accessories. Prior to joining Shopko, she held several senior management positions in merchandising, planning, and private label management at Sears and Kohl's. She began her career at Carson Pirie Scott in Chicago.

In the announcement, Paul Brown, director of J.C.Penney's board of directors and chair of the research committee, jubilantly indicated that she was a top runner with good experience in clothing and merchandising. She has a solid work experience, understands style, quality and inspires others.

Ron Tysoe, chairman of the board, said that "she has a reputation for improving profitability and achieving results." He also stated that "she has the talent and passion to revitalize the company."

In my blogs of August 3rd, 2018 and October 1, 2018, I listed some success criteria for J.C. Penney's CEO. Here again this checklist with my comments:

  1. Be a merchant – she is.
  2. Be a digital scholar – I hope she's there.
  3. Be an innovator – she is.
  4. Be customer centric – she is.
  5. Be careful – she'd better learn quickly.
  6. Be a visionary – I am told that she is a great source of inspiration for those around her – this may be a start for something big.

I can check most criteria and I am optimistic for others. I am happy that the expectation of a new CEO is over. It's not Ron Johnson, a former CEO, who wanted to reinvent the company without understanding the customer base. It was a disaster. She is a strong trader and I think she can energize the business and bring new ideas to the business. Competent staff is in place and associates are ready to win.

Todd Purdy, Leonard Green & Partners, congratulated him for his passion, strategic vision and success. He called him an excellent chef. Let's welcome Jill with our best wishes.
