CNN White House correspondent Jim Acosta was arrested Monday at President Donald Trump's rally in South Carolina as members of the crowd chanted, "Go home!" And "CNN fears!"
Acosta reportedly waited in the press box during the rally in West Columbia, where the president was about to campaign for Republican state governor Henry McMaster. But before the arrival of Trump, participants holding placards announcing "false news from CNN" began to sing for the journalist to leave the venue. At one point, a woman pointed at the journalist, repeating "Take him out" and urging his rallying comrades to heckle him.
Acosta tried to shake the woman's hand by telling him that he had the right to cover the event. He then said that he respected the United States while the woman was shaking his arms.
"No, you do not respect it," the woman shouted.
Acosta later addressed the event on CNN.
"While we had people coming to us and being kind, an elderly woman came to see me not long ago," he told CNN's Wolf Blitzer. "She approached me and told me that CNN should take the" f "out of this auditorium and then turn to the crowd and whip them into a frenzy."
He continued, "We are here to do our work and report the news and report on this gathering, and we will not go anywhere."
Later in the evening, Trump began his speech on a familiar note, attacking the press and calling the media gathered at the "false news" rally, a taunt that drew hoarse boos and jeers.
"The enemy, the enemy of the people I name," said the president of the media.
Despite his continual attacks on CNN, he seemed to be aiming for a new target following a barbed wire with host Jimmy Fallon that night. "NBC is worse than CNN," Trump joked.
Acosta has often been angered by the president and other White House officials, including press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, over the past year.
