Jim Acosta thanks Trump supporter for apology after rally: ‘We had a moment’

CNN’s Jim Acosta, one of President Trump’s most vocal media critics, finally “had a moment” with the administration’s supporters.

A couple identified as Merlin and Ilene told the network’s chief White House correspondent Wednesday evening that they were sorry for how they treated him at a rally in Tampa, Florida. The exchange came after Mr. Trump spoke to supporters in Fort Myers.

“Had a hell of a night in Fort Myers,” Mr. Acosta said in a subsequent tweet, which included video of the exchange. “This man apologized for giving me the finger at a rally earlier this year in Tampa. Really. We had a moment.”

The contentious relationship between the White House and CNN has escalated in recent weeks with pundits blaming Mr. Trump for numerous mail bombs that were sent to the network and prominent Democrats.

“I just wanted to apologize for flipping you off in Tampa. I got carried away,” Merlin said. “You know, it’s like I was asking for facts and not opinions. That’s all we want. I do get carried away so I just wanted to apologize.”

“Thank you. That’s very nice of you to say that,” Mr. Acosta replied. “I accept your apology and I hope I get to see you again.”

Cesar Sayoc, 56, was arrested last week in connection with the mail bomb threats.

Federal charges against him include: interstate transportation of an explosive; illegal mailing of explosives; threats against former presidents and other persons; threatening interstate communications; and assaulting federal officers.

None of the packages detonated and no one was injured.
