The San Francisco 49ers have no hope without quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who may have torn his left ACL late in the day against the Kansas City Chiefs.
We will not know until Monday, but that's what the team fears, according to Adam Schefter from ESPN.
This is not an injury that Garoppolo can recover from this season, and this is not an injury that the 49ers can recover from one or the other.
Before Garoppolo was installed at the end of last season, the 49ers had lost 24 of their previous 26 games. And even if this team can still be better than that, the defense gives up 29.7 points per game. The Niners had a bad start, even with Garoppolo in the center, and keeping in touch with the Los Angeles Rams and the NFC wild card contenders was a challenge.
When you think about it, it is strange that the loss of only one player can condemn a complete list of 53 players. There are probably less than 30 players in the NFL who are so valuable.
But Garoppolo is without a doubt one of them.
There is a reason why he is the fourth highest paid player in the league. Since taking office in December, the 49ers have averaged 27.1 points per game in eight games.
Had Garoppolo earned enough passes to qualify last season, his completion percentage (67.4) would have been in the top five in the NFL, while his passer (96.2) was # 1. He would have placed in the top 10. And among the quarterbacks with at least 20 attempts, he was ranked fifth in the league in third place and highest in the fourth quarter.
He fought against one of the league's best defenses this year, but since then he's got a score of 116.4 and a touchdown / interception ratio of four to zero in consecutive games without a turnover. .

The 49ers may have had the chance to stay competitive with a strong quarterback and a healthy team, but they do not have any of these things.
The only other quarterback of the team is the third round pick of 2017. CJ Beathard, who has only completed 54.9% of his passes, has launched more interceptions (six) than (four) and scored 69.2 in seven participations. It is a low end, which will certainly cause the 49ers to seek outside help to the most important position of the sport.
Nobody on the market should be significantly better than Beathard. Otherwise, they would not be on the market. San Francisco will have to ride with Beathard, which could be disastrous given the lack of support from his quarters.

The 49ers also find themselves without the league's seventh-best payout, after losing Jerick McKinnon in a torn LCA on Labor Day weekend. McKinnon's replacement, Matt Breida, played well before suffered a knee injury Sunday. Third-year guard Joshua Garnett was a headache when he was in good health, but he came out with a dislocated toe, and the rest of the offensive line ran into trouble. Garoppolo has been sacked 10 times in the last two games.
The defense has many young talents and should benefit from the return of suspension linebacker Reuben Foster, but Solomon Thomas, the number three in 2017, and Richard Sherman, quarterback Pro Bowl, have been eliminated. also injured in Kansas City.

C.J. Beathard says that he has spoken with Jimmy Garoppolo just now. "He told me to lead these guys."
The Philadelphia Eagles won the Super Bowl without their star quarterback last season, but Beathard is not Nick Foles, and the rest of San Francisco's list does not compare to that of Philadelphia. Instead, unfortunately, the 49ers season should follow a similar path to the 2017 Houston Texans campaign.
Houston was dominant in the attack and in the mix with a 3-4 record when quarterback Deshaun Watson ripped off his ACL. The Texans have been held at 16 points or less in eight of their last nine games and have lost all eight of those cases.
By the time Watson collapsed, the football world knew that he could stuff a fork into the Texans. And if Garoppolo is out for the season, it will be the case with the 49ers.
It's hard to find a silver track for this, but the timing of this injury means at least that Garoppolo will have a full year to recover before next season. And the front-office and coaching staff will be able to pass 13 low-pressure stages to evaluate the many talented young players that San Francisco has on both sides of the ball.
That's unless he decides to call former 49er and current free agent Colin Kaepernick, who threw 16 touchdowns to just four interceptions during his last run in 2016. But it does not appear that the team acquired Garoppolo last fall, so those hoping for a return from Kaepernick should not hold their breath.
No, in another reminder, life is not fair and football either, the 49ers are considering a spoiled season.
