John Carpenter was drunk when he ended up with the Twist Twist of Halloween II

Although this becomes an important part of the mythology in the following films, Laurie Strode and Michael Myers of Jamie Lee Curtis were not brothers and sisters in the 1978 original Halloween. This twist actually took place in Halloween II and apparently in part came from John Carpenter being intoxicated. The screenwriter / director of the first Halloween and co-author of Halloween II spoke of what led to the twist and his disdain for her, saying:

Despite his general talent, John Carpenter is far from being the only person in human history to have had a bad idea while in an altered mental state. It looks like he and co-writer Debra Hill were under fire from critics with a bad case of writer blocking and had to somehow come up with something, then with the help of a little liquid inspiration, they forced this connection with the brotherly twist.

The first Halloween is considered a horror film so perfect and the birth of the sub-genre slasher that it really does not need anything or what has been changed or added. But as John Carpenter told the Daily Beast, for the television broadcast of the film, they needed to extend the length, which required the addition of additional material, a problem they were struggling with.

So during the shoot Halloween IIand, with a little help from alcohol and despair, they added the sister touch to the extended TV version of Halloween. This twist was then incorporated into Halloween II and continued throughout the series through decades of sequels and reboots.

Looking back, obviously, John Carpenter is not happy with this turn, and we understand somehow why. He did not even want sequels, and a bad choice of history ended up becoming an important part.

Forcing family bonds when done right can be awesome and shocking (The empire counter-attack), but it's so exaggerated, and making everything connected in this way is often a bad or lazy writing case. In this case, Michael Myers is a killer with a purpose against just a force of nature, killing randomly without rhyme or reason.

Now, almost 40 years after the introduction of the fraternal turn, the decision to make this drunk decision has finally dissipated. David Gordon Green's new Halloween restores the continuity of the franchise by removing everything except the original film, including Halloween II. And since Halloween TV extended version is not canon, it means that Laurie Strode and Michael Myers are no longer brothers and sisters.

The trailer Halloween even refers to the connection between siblings as "something inventive", letting the public know that the slate has been erased.
