"It seems like John Dingell had a heart attack early this morning, he's alert and in a good mood, joking as always," Debbie Dingell said in a brief statement.
"He is being admitted to Henry Ford Hospital. Our sincere thanks to all health professionals and nurses on our side. We will know later. "
John Dingell retired from Congress in January 2015 after 60 years at Capitol Hill, where he shaped some of the most important laws of modern times. He was and remains the oldest congressman in the history of the country.
He replaced his father in the House when the former Dingell died in 1955 and played a pivotal role in the establishment of Medicare, the Civil Rights Act, the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, Endangered Species Act, and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, better known as the ObamaCare.
In announcing his retirement in 2014, Mr. Dingell has deplored the bitter tone and partisan spirit of this Congress in recent years.
"I find that serving in the House is odious," said Dingell at the time. "It has become very difficult because of acrimony and bitterness."
Debbie Dingell replaced him in the 12th district of Michigan, which includes Dearborn and the western suburbs of Detroit.
Since his retirement, John Dingell has earned a reputation as a prolific and cheeky commentator on Twitter, where he has sharply criticized the Trump administration.
His last tweet was posted Sunday, while apparently watching an NFL game between the Green Bay Packers and the Minnesota Vikings. Two field goals missed late in this game left the game tied.
"We're starting to think I could be an NFL kicker," he joked.
