Sheil Kapadia, Athletics, has pleaded for nine contenders for the AFC this season, and the Ravens have fallen into the category "Do not count the leavers".
"It's perhaps the most difficult team to plan for this season," wrote Kapadia. "I like the fact that the Ravens mingle with all of Greg Roman who designs and organizes an offensive built around Jackson, but I need to see more to believe in him as a passer … it's one of the highest variance teams in the league. The Baltimore season could really go in a number of different directions, one of which includes a North AFC title and a playoff race. We know two things about a team led by John Harbaugh that gives the Ravens an advantage: It will be great for the special teams. And it will be aggressive. "
King also praised Eric DeCosta's commitment to analysis. The first-year general manager has beefed up the department this season with new hires and is close to Orioles deputy general manager Sig Mejdal.
"The Ravens were the leaders in the accumulation of compensatory draft picks, and the league followed," King wrote. "The Ravens realized that offensive linemen in the spreading systems had been tortured to acclimatize to the NFL, so they made hay with pro line players at the Big Ten round." All of Baltimore's offensive strategy goes against what the rest of the NFL does.
"We are looking for 1%, 2%, 3% benefits," DeCosta told King. "There is more than 50% advantage."
