(Bloomberg) – President Donald Trump's chief of staff and his national security advisor staged a stalemate outside the Oval Office Thursday, according to three people close to the episode.
Chief of Staff John Kelly and National Security Advisor John Bolton quarreled over immigration and border crossing, including the performance of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, said someone close to the file.
Bolton criticized Nielsen, a former Kelly MP who he proposed to replace him in the department. Trump has sided with Bolton, said the person, which could once again spark rumors that Kelly would soon leave the White House.
Trump recently expressed his fury at a large group of migrants traveling from Honduras to the US border. He pledged Thursday to deploy the army and close the Mexican border unless the migrants are turned back.
The clashes indicate that tension is mounting in the White House 19 days before the mid-term elections in which Republican control of Congress is at stake. The screams have been so intense that other House White feared that one of the two men would resign immediately. None of the men quit, people said.
Trump is aware of the argument, people said, even though the president told the press that he did not know it before boarding Air Force One to travel to Montana for a campaign rally. He recently sought to make immigration a bigger political issue, accusing Democrats of increasing the number of migrants crossing the border.
