John Legend: The artist claims the status of EGOT after the victory of Emmy

It was a crazy night Sunday for the artist John Legend. There were rewards. Historical victories Bad tacos.

He joins only 14 other people who have received the quadruple crown, a distinguished list that includes Audrey Hepburn, Mel Brooks and composer Richard Rodgers (the first to have received all four).

But even on this unofficial list, Legend stands out. At 39, he is the second youngest to reach the status of just eight months, and the second fastest to reach that distinction.

It took Legend 12 years to finish his career with a 2006 Grammy as the best new artist. He went on to win nine more.

Only Robert Lopez of "The Book of Mormon" was younger, less than a year old. And he finished the set in 10 years.

Perhaps equally remarkable, there were only 12 EGOT champions before Sunday.

But five awards for "Jesus Christ Superstar" won three club entries, bringing the total to 15. The legendary theater composer and legend Andrew Lloyd Webber received an Emmy, as did songwriter Tim Rice.

Legend's meteoric career was rewarded last year with a Tony Award for co-producing August Wilson's "Jitney" cover. He won an Oscar in 2015 with Common for the best original song from the movie "Selma".

With his EGOT, he became the second African-American member after Whoopi Goldberg.

Chrissy Teigen, author, model, Twitter empress and amateur entomologist, praised her husband on social networks.

She filmed Legend, still in his tuxedo, playing on a piano bench to reach the highest shelf in his already popular collection. He places Emmy in the center, backs up and smiles widely.

"Perfect," she said, her voice hoarse after a night probably buzzing.
